When is the last time you had a men’s health checkup?
June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness for preventative care, and encourage men to schedule regular appointments and screenings. This as studies show a significant difference in the health of men compared to women.
The CDC says the average lifespan for a man is about five years less than a woman. Men are almost twice as likely to die of a heart attack, and at higher risk of cancer compared to most women.
To make matters worse, the studies show men are half as likely as women to go to the doctor over a 2-year period and three times as likely to go more than five years without a visit.
3 tips to take control of your health
The good news: the ability to take control of men’s health is well within reach. Here are three simple steps as told by our experts.
- Regular checkups and screenings – “We need to be focusing on the idea of getting ahead of things and being proactive, rather than reactive,” says Jonathan Vogt. “Actually having scheduled visits and scheduled screenings will allow us to get in front of things before they are no longer manageable.”
- Preventative Medication – “There’s always been a stigma around men’s health more than women against taking a medication every day,” says Dr. Agustin. “Many want an abortive cure, though they aren’t necessarily willing to invest in a preventative medication. That’s our challenge as providers is to help educate those individuals on the value of preventative care.”
- Take control of your mental health – “Something around 1/5th of the U.S. population has a diagnosable mental health condition at any given time,” says Ben Benson. “So it’s important that if you’re not feeling well, including with your mental health, to talk to your doctor about it. Come in and see us. Be seen so you can get help.”
