November: Focus on Mental Health
October is an important month for raising awareness about mental health and various mental health conditions, and Hunter Health vibrantly supports all efforts. October is recognized as National Depression and ADHD Awareness Month, a time to shed light on two common but often misunderstood conditions. Throughout the month, there is a heightened focus on these disorders’ impact, the importance of early detection, and treatment options availability.
The month also features Mental Illness Awareness Week, which runs from Oct. 6-12. This week provides an opportunity for communities, health professionals, and advocates to unite in reducing stigma and fostering open conversations about mental illness. Directly following is OCD Awareness Week, from Oct. 13-19, dedicated to educating the public about obsessive-compulsive disorder and supporting those affected.
Several other key dates punctuate October’s mental health awareness efforts. National Depression Screening Day, on Oct. 10, encourages individuals to take proactive steps by participating in screenings for depression, a condition that affects millions but often goes undiagnosed. World Mental Health Day, also on Oct. 10, is a global event that promotes mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. Finally, Oct. 17 marks Global Peer Support Day, a day to recognize the vital role of peer support in recovery and mental health care.
Throughout October, Hunter Health wants to remind everyone of the importance of mental health, early intervention, and the collective responsibility to support those living with mental health conditions.
