Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is Here!

From September 15 to October 15, communities across the country — and right here in Wichita — join together to celebrate the rich history, vibrant cultures, and lasting contributions of Hispanic and Latino people. It’s a time for reflection, celebration, and connection, as we recognize how deeply these traditions, innovations, and stories have shaped our shared history.

A Celebration with Deep Roots

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, declared by President Lyndon Johnson. Two decades later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to a full month, and in 1988 it became law. Today, it’s recognized nationwide, from classrooms and community centers to festivals and cultural showcases.

This year’s theme — “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” — is a reminder that we are all connected through the legacies that came before us and the possibilities that lie ahead. It’s about remembering the struggles and triumphs of the past while embracing the opportunity to create a more inclusive and united tomorrow.

Voices from Hunter Health

Our Facilities and Safety Coordinator, Airial Wedel, shares her perspective:

“For me, Hispanic Heritage Month is pure joy — a chance to recognize the creativity, resilience, and traditions that have enriched our lives in countless ways. It’s about coming together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and dream big for the future.”

Her words speak to the heart of this celebration — it’s not just about history, but about the living culture all around us.

Wichita’s Local Flavor

Right here in Wichita, you’ll find plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month. From lively cultural festivals and art exhibits to community gatherings and educational events, there’s something for everyone. You can also show support year-round by visiting Latino-owned shops, markets, bakeries, and restaurants — enjoying everything from fresh pan dulce to authentic regional cuisine. Every purchase, every visit, and every shared moment helps strengthen the bonds within our community.

Let’s Celebrate Together

At Hunter Health, we believe in honoring the diversity that makes us stronger. This month is an opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate — together. Whether it’s attending a local event, exploring Hispanic art and music, or simply sharing a meal with friends and family, every act of celebration matters.

So, let’s honor, uplift, and share in the joy of Hispanic Heritage Month. ¡Vamos a celebrar!
