Hunter Health offers access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) or Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).

What is MOUD/MAT?

MOUD/MAT is FDA-approved treatment that combines medication and behavioral therapy to treat substance use disorders such as opioid use disorder.

We hear this concern often, and we want to be clear: MOUD is not trading one addiction for another. The medication we prescribe works differently than opioids used recreationally — they don’t produce a high. They help reduce cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a medical condition, not a choice, and like any serious illness, it requires proper treatment. Left untreated, it can be fatal.

What is the medication?

There are a few different medications that can be used for MOUD/MAT, Hunter Health specifically uses Suboxone, generically known as buprenorphine-naloxone.

Suboxone is prescribed because it is significantly safer than non-prescribed opioids and has been shown to reduce the risk of overdose death.

We have a pharmacy onsite, which means patients can fill their prescription same day, in the same building.

What does treatment look like?

Your treatment at Hunter Health is built around primary care – both medical and behavioral health providers will be part of your team.

There are four main phases of MOUD: screening (can be over the phone), induction (first 1-3 days), stabilization (several weeks), and maintenance (as long as it takes).

The length of time a patient receives MOUD is tailored to meet the needs of each person, and in some cases, treatment can be indefinite.

The first step is to complete a screening call with one of our Integrated Care Staff.
