HIV Testing and Counseling

Hunter Health works to increase awareness of HIV, promote testing as part of routine health care, and connect individuals who are HIV-positive with care to improve health outcomes. Due to advances in treatment, an individual who tests positive for HIV can stay healthy for many years and reduce the chance of transmitting HIV to their partner, but early detection is critical.

Hunter Health provides HIV testing and counseling at our Central location. If you believe you are at risk, having a negative result will put your mind at ease. If the diagnosis is positive, we refer you to a specialist who will work directly with you to develop a custom treatment plan that fits your needs.

Who should get tested?

  • The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as a part of routine health care.
  • About 1 in 7 people in the United States who have HIV do not know they have it.
  • If you’re pregnant, talk to your health care provider about getting tested for HIV and other ways to protect you and your child from getting HIV.
  • Even if you are in a monogamous relationship, you should find out for sure whether you or your partner has HIV.

How do I know if I’m at risk?

  • If your sex partner has a different HIV status than you, then you may be at risk for getting or transmitting HIV.
  • Having another sexually transmitted disease can increase the risk getting or transmitting HIV.
  • Sharing needles, syringes and other drug injection equipment (for medical purposes, getting high, tattoos, piercings, etc.) can lead to the transmittal of HIV.
  • The misuse of alcohol and drugs can make you more likely to make decisions that put you at risk for HIV. To learn about our Substance Use programs, go here.
